Vermont's Evolution Since the Revolution
America celebrates its 250th anniversary only once!
July 4, 2026 will mark the 250th anniversary of the Second Continental Congress signing of the Declaration of Independence, and the formation of the United States of America. Vermonters were pivotal in the colonists' struggle for independence from Great Britain. From the Green Mountain Boys' successful assault on Fort Ticonderoga to the Battle of Hubbardton and the Battle of Bennington, Vermont troops played a crucial role in defeating British forces. These victories were instrumental in shifting the momentum of the war in favor of the new Americans.
The semiquincentennial is not just about the events of 1776, however. At it's core, it's about the entire historic journey through generations that has formed America into what it is today. America's 250th is about recognizing the collective, cumulative story of its inhabitants - all the complexities that came before and are occurring now. What do "we the people" desire from our future? Embrace this moment and engage in meaningful conversations with others.
