VASS welcomes two Keynote Speakers this year, as well as a wealth of dynamic Breakout Sessions which will be of interest
to K-16 Social Studies educators. The conference will host vendors, provide freebies, offer networking opportunities, and serve
delicious food.
The Vermont Historical Society will be present for two Breakout Sessions at the conference:
- The Buffalo Soldiers in Vermont: Exploring Perspective through Primary Sources
- This workshop provides teachers with an exploration of how to use primary sources to learn about histories that have been intentionally left out or forgotten. The Buffalo Soldiers were stationed in Vermont from 1901 to 1913, at a time when many Black Vermonters moved away from the state. The Vermont History Museum's hands-on program The Buffalo Soldiers: Life in the 10th Cavalry examines the intersections between the soldiers' daily lives and Vermont's complex racial past. The workshop will provide an overview of the program's development, and strategies teachers can use to implement primary sources in the classroom.
- Vermont History Day: An Insider's Look at Curriculum Integration
- Inspire students to examine their world through the lens of “Rights and Responsibilities.” In affiliation with National History Day, Vermont History Day is a powerful conduit for archival research, as students choose a topic related to the overarching theme. Essential questions will drive critical inquiry while building transferable skills like analyzation, interpretation, and presentation through project-based learning. Harness students’ creative abilities to showcase their learning through original papers, exhibits, performances, websites, or documentaries. Learn how an experienced VHD teacher has successfully integrated the program into his curriculum. Leave with practical advice and materials to help connect your students with this opportunity!
