Judging at Vermont History Day is a great way to give back to students across the state! Judges are responsible for evaluating student projects the day of the event, and determining which projects are eligible for the National Contest in June. Working in teams of three, judges interact with the student historians, asking them questions about their projects and research. At the end of the contest, judges provide written feedback for each student, providing encouragement and validation of the student's work.

Volunteer judges provide students with a high-quality educational experience—whether or not they win a prize. Your background, knowledge, and perspective are a valuable contribution of insight and confidence for students to take their next steps in life.

What qualifications do I need to judge at Vermont History Day? Some background experience or knowledge in History, Academic Research, or Secondary Education is preferred. We also have additional volunteer opportunities the day of the contest.
How do I judge entries? Judges work in teams of three to evaluate student work. Judges use National History Day’s rubric to evaluate student work, 80% of the evaluation focuses on historical research and 20% focuses on clarity of presentation. At the contest you will have a chance to interview students about the creation of their project
I’m not available April 5^th, how can I still be involved? This year, we are judging special prizes with a separate judge team. These judges will receive access to the eligible projects on March 27^th and will review the projects by April 3^rd.
